LASER REMOVAL OF GLASSES / REFRACTIVE ERROR
Laser procedure, particularly LASIK, is a common method for removing spectacles by reshaping the cornea to correct vision problems like near-sightedness, far-sightedness and astigmatism.
This OUTPATIENT PROCEDURE involves creating a corneal flap, reshaping the underlying tissue with a laser, and then repositioning the flap. Other laser procedures like PRK and Bladelesslasikare also available, each with its own technique and considerations.
Types of Laser Specs Removal Surgery: (Laser Vision Correction Procedure)
LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis): This is the most popular method, creating a flap on the cornea, reshaping it with a laser, and then replacing the flap. It offers rapid visual recovery.
PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy): PRK does not involve creating a flap. Instead, the outer layer of the cornea is removed before laser reshaping.
Bladeless: A femtosecond laser is used to create a flap of theCornea.Rest of the procedure is like Lasik.
KLEX: Corneal lenticule is created using laser and extracted through a small incision to reshape Cornea.
Benefits of Laser Specs Removal
Improved Vision: Laser procedure aims to correct refractive errors, allowing for clear vision without glasses or contact lenses.
Reduced Dependence on Glasses/Contact s:Many individuals experience a significant reduction or complete elimination of the need for corrective eyewear.
Quick Recovery: LASIK, in particular, offers relatively quick visual recovery, often within a day or two.
Safety: Laser vision correction is considered a safe and effective procedure.
Considerations and Risks
Dry Eyes:A common side effect of laser surgery is temporary dryness, which can be managed with lubricating eye drops.
Other Potential Side Effects:rarely infection.
Individual Suitability:Not everyone is a suitable candidate for laser surgery. Factors like age, eye health, the severity of refractive error and measurements of cornea are considered during evaluation.
Long-term Results: While most patients experience long-term vision correction, individual results may vary.
Are both eyes treated at the same time?
Yes, all laser vision correction procedures are done in both eyes at the same time.
What is the minimum age for laser eye surgery
It is important that patients have a stable glass prescription when opting for laser eye surgery and it is for that reason that many patients are not suitable until the age of 18.
Is it Painful?
During the procedure :
Anaesthetic drops are used to numb the eye, so you should not feel pain during the procedure itself.
After the procedure:
You may feel mild discomfort, a burning sensation, or like something is in your eye, but these are usually temporary and manageable with prescribed eye drops and mild pain relievers.
How long does laser eye procedure take to heal?
Your recovery time will depend on a number of factors, including the type of treatment you've had, your age, and your body’s natural healing ability.
While a vast majority of patients experience improved vision within 24 hours of having procedure, full recovery can take up to 2to 3 weeks.
How Long Do Results Last?
The results of LASIK are generally permanent because it permanently alters the corneal shape.
What Are the Side Effects and Complications?
Common side effects:
Dry eyes and temporary vision changes like blurry or cloudy vision, halos around lights, or light sensitivity are common and usually resolve within a few weeks or months.
Complications:
While rare, complications can occur. These can include flap displacement if you rub your eye or makeup too soon after surgery, requiring additional treatment.
What is the Recovery Time?
Immediate: Your vision may be hazy or blurry right after the procedure.
First Few Days: You will need to rest for a couple of days. You may be able to return to work or college in 2-3 days if your comfort allows.
First Few Weeks/Months: You'll need to use prescribed eye drops for a while. Avoid eye makeup for a week or two, and refrain from swimming, using hot tubs, or engaging in contact sports for about a month.
Contact sports and LASIK surgery
If you are involved in contact sports on a regular basis, you may be a good candidate for laser eye surgery since it is not convenient for you to wear glasses or contact lenses.
Your Surgeon can recommend the best procedure for you during your in-depth pre-operative assessments.
Are There Alternatives?
If you have thin corneas or other medical conditions that make you unsuitable for LASIK, your doctor may suggest alternative procedures, such as implantable contact lenses (ICLs).
