Retinal disorders are eye conditions that damage the light-sensitive tissue (RETINA)at the back of the eye.
What Are TheSymptoms ?
• Sudden or increasing number of floaters: Small specks or cobweb-like structures that appear to move across your vision.
• Flashes of light: Bright flashes in your field of vision.
• Blurry or distorted vision: Difficulty seeing clearly or straight.
• Sudden vision loss: A feeling of a curtain or grayness falling across your sight.
• Blind spots in your central or peripheral vision (vision to the sides of your central vision).
• Difficulty seeing at night or adjusting when the light changes.
What are the risk factors for retinal diseases?
• Visual Acuity Test: Checks the smallest letters that can be read.
• Tonometry: Measures the pressure inside the eye.
• Refraction test: Check eyeglass prescription.
• Color vision test: Assesses color perception
• Slit-lamp examination: Examines the front and middle parts of the eye.
• Amsler Grid Test : A simple test to detect visual distortions, which can be an early sign of macular degeneration.
• Dilated Fundus Evaluation: A routine eye exam where the pupils are dilated to allow a thorough examination of the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels.
• Fundus Photography : Captures images of the retina, enabling doctors to identify various retinal diseases.
• Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT):OCT uses light waves to create detailed cross-sectional images of the retina, helping to assess the extent of disease and the health of the retina.
How Are Retinal Disorders Detected?
• Old Age.
• Smoking.
• Diabetes,
• Hypertension
• Previous retinal tears or detachments.
• Having had previous eye injuries or surgeries.
• Family history of retinal diseases.
• Severe myopia (being very nearsighted).
• Medication such as hydroxychloroquine
Treatment For Retinal Disorders
1) Topical medication(eye drops):
Some retinal conditions require topical medications.
2) Intravitreal Injections of Medicines like,
Anti VEGF & Steroid
These Injections are recommended for the following retinal conditions:
• Wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD).
• Advanced diabetic retinopathy.
• Macular edema from various causes.
• Eye infections.
• Inflammatory eye diseases.
